How To Solve Problems Using Different Filters

There are many ways we can describe life. I see life as a series of choices and their consequences. Many people use the perspective of problems and solutions as their way to navigate from day-to-day. When you focus on solutions the approach I offer to solve problems using different filters is likely to prove useful.

To solve a problem remember your competent experience before going back to it.

Filters To Solve Problems

The other day I witnessed my daughter moving her friend from a negative emotional state to one of positivity by showing interest in a subject about which her friend felt competent and interested.  It evoked lots of good memories for her, which in turn were linked to positive emotions. This is how creative solutions are found.

This reminded me of an important technique I learned years ago. You can create a more resourceful state by changing the filters through which you approach a problem.

To grasp the significance of filters think of binoculars, microscopes or telescopes. These are gadgets that allow us to extend our visual capacity. We all know how to do this when looking out into the material world.

You can also use the same method with more abstract subjects. Here is how you do it.

Solve Problems By Evoking A Resourceful State Using Different Filters

  • Think of a problem you feel stuck. Write it down.
  • Think of a memory where you feel competent, happy and resourceful. Write them down.
  • In your mind’s eye re-experience those events around your competent memory.
  • Now think about the original problem as the competent, happy and resourceful person you have just been.
  • Write down anything that comes to your mind in relation to your problem without taking your pencil off of the paper for 5 minutes.
  • When it is finished take a moment to think about what has happened.
  • Read what you have written.

You will find that either you have the solution to your problem or you are on your way to resolving it.
