How To Protect From Trauma

Last week I attended an inspiring workshop by June-Elleni Laine. The title was ‘Right Brain and Techniques To Develop Intuition’. At the time I did not know that the technique I learnt about how to protect from trauma and exterior influences was going to be so necessary to share with you. Unfortunately only few days later, many lost their lives in the bombing in Istanbul.

We can protect ourselves from the negative effects of traumatic events.

Intuition and Inspiration

Einstein said ‘The only real valuable thing is intuition’. June-Elleni Laine describes herself as a Creative Writer, Spirit Inspired Artist, Intuitive & innovative Educator. She refers to the word Intuition as “In-Tuition” meaning “Inner Tutor”, referring to our personal wisdom which in turn helps us to interpret inspiration which is about being able to receive the spiritual wisdom.

I understand that in order to nurture our intuition and inspiration we need to be relaxed and open. However we often allow situations and people to unbalance us. We have feelings of unease in our guts, or anger resulting in cycles of blame and defensiveness.  June-Elleni teaches us that you can create protection for yourself using a simple technique.

What Happens When Bombs Explode in The City You Live

I decided to share this technique specially now because of the known psychological effects of terrorism on individuals and communities. Most people will experience mild distress, a smaller group will develop symptoms. These people will benefit from psychological and medical interventions.  A smaller group will suffer from psychiatric illnesses and need specialized treatment. Proximity to the event, the time spent watching the television news coverage, in reading papers are also associated with the severity of the symptoms.  There are also people who are more vulnerable to experience pain around them in any case.

The Simple Technique To Protect From Trauma

Here is the very simple, easy to use technique to protect from trauma and external influences both at a personal as well as community level:

• Relax, bring to your awareness the three energy centres; throat, heart and spleen
• Put your intention to close them like a flower.
• Focus on each of them and close one by one.
• Surround yourself by a protective layer.

In addition to applying these steps I also suggest you limit the time you watch news coverage or reading papers. And especially make sure your children are not exposed to such toxic words and images.

Of course you may also appreciate that this technique to protect from trauma can help you to stay centered around people in pain, manage difficulties with your partner, with your children and with your elderly parents.

However devastating the effects of terrorism might be, research shows that there is a possibility for trauma being followed by growth and communities to become more united. Then intuition, inspiration and creative solutions is able to work via us for the benefit of the whole. This is what I wish for us all.
