Why Prefer Online Therapy?
Although working online through written messages with people who are hard of hearing or who have social anxieties is also called online therapy, my topic today is why people prefer online therapy through video talk.
A video conference is most similar to meeting your therapist in their office. You are in communication with one another and, unlike in psychanalysis, you can see your therapist’s reactions, and they can see and hear you back, using an inexpensive microphone and webcam, in addition to a few free programs.
First of all, you have to establish a setting where you have a reliable Internet connection, and where you won’t have to worry about being overheard and being interrupted by the door bell or the phone ringing. Most people prefer to make the connection from the comfortable and secure surroundings of their home. You can then connect to your consultant through the webcam and microphone using a software program such as Skype.
Your therapist will create a safe, therapeutic setting where you can express your problems and get help. You will gain a new perspective on your dilemmas about your life and your relationships, and produce solutions. You can make your payments through bank transfer or with a credit card. You can settle the date and time for your next appointment, when you will meet with your therapist again.
Online Therapy Makes It Easy
There may be times where appointments will have to be rescheduled due to bad weather or Internet connection problems. If your camera and microphone settings have been changed and you don’t have the technical skills necessary to fix them and there isn’t someone with you who can fix it for you, and your therapist is unable to help you in that area, your session may need to be postponed. Although such circumstances do arise occasionally, you might come across similar emergencies involving face-to-face therapy, like when you car breaks down, or you get caught up in traffic, or bad weather gets in your way and you are late for your appointment or cannot make it there at all. Despite all these problems, online consulting is still easier than going into a consulting center, which is why an increasing number of people choose online therapy everyday. Suppose you are half an hour late for your session due to reasons beyond your control. The likelihood of an online therapist’s giving you the full duration of an hour even though you’re late, or rescheduling your appointment to a later time the same day would be higher.
You don’t have to travel to reach your therapist. If you live in a city, you won’t lose time in traffic, you won’t incur any travel expenses, you won’t spend any time away from your loved ones, and you won’t be exposed to air pollution. If you live in a smaller community where there isn’t a therapist, you can still see your therapist as often as you like. Besides, this may be the only option you have, to get qualified support. If you are abroad, it will be a valuable opportunity for you to be able to see a consultant who speaks your language, who is from the same culture as you, as often as you need, without having to wait to return to your country.
Your therapist will also benefit as they will not lose time and energy commuting to their office, they will have more time in their hands to improve their skills and will be more peaceful and more competent working with you. As they will not be paying office rent, you can also expect therapy fees to be lower.
Online therapy can give you much greater flexibility in deciding session times, benefiting both you and your therapist. For example, you could log in in the evening, after having put your child to bed next door and get couples therapy to solve your problems with your spouse. Suppose your baby wakes up, you can pick it up and even feed it during the session. Your therapist can easily send you the therapeutic videos that they have prepared or selected for you.
If you live in a prying neighborhood, online therapy protects your privacy as noone can possibly know you are seeking help, yet there is always a possibility of encountering someone you know when you walk into a center.
For all these reasons, an increasing number of people choose online therapy every day.
