Conscious Teachers Who Help Increase Their Pupils Emotional Intelligence – Congratulations to You on Teachers’ Day!

Our teachers and our education! We have found in them our most valuable resources as well our most awful traumas… We spend so much time in educational environments that the effect of a teacher on a child is much more significant than that of any other adult. Our topic is how teachers can nurture emotional intelligence in the classroom environment.

Conscious Teachers Who Help Increase Their Pupils Emotional Intelligence – Conratulations to You on Teachers’ Day!

A person’s ability to motivate themselves, to regulate their emotions and to think in stressful situations, to be hopeful, to empathize, and to control their impulses are indicators of emotional intelligence.

What Is Emotional Intelligence, Why Is It Important?

Emotional intelligence is a trait that defines life success and affects one’s relationship with oneself and others. It consists of five elements: Self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.

In other words, a person’s ability to motivate themselves, to regulate their emotions and to think in stressful situations, to be hopeful, to empathise, and to control their impulses are indicators of emotional intelligence.

Conscious Teachers’ Attitudes That Nurture Emotional Intelligence

I have written before about supporting teachers for a better world and the importance of emphasising in-class cooperation and self-development instead of comparing students.

Students will come to school willingly when they are approached with love and compassion, and shown affection appropriately to their age and needs.

They will find it easier to study for and achieve better in courses taught by teachers that they like, because they feel approved and understood and comfortable. These are factors that promote emotional intelligence.

Also, teachers may ask students to keep a journal, to increase their self-awareness.

Creative and fun activities nurture emotional intelligence. For example, bullying can be eliminated by developing empathy through role playing.

Being a Role Model

Much as adults try to get children do what they preach and not what they do, it’s human nature to adopt what one sees.

When your students see you express your feelings and your vulnerability, and keep your calm under stress, they will learn to do the same. When you let them in on your solution processes and share your methods, it will allow them to acquire and use these skills both in the classroom and in other areas of their life.

Students in Wheelchairs

The presence of a disabled student in the class or in the school is a great opportunity for emotional intelligence development for everyone sharing the same environment.

Having a friend with a different experience, they will learn to establish a wholesome and constructive relationship with people who are different from them and who may be at a disadvantage. Talking about their anxieties such as “could that happen to me?” will help them develop higher emotional intelligence and a greater psychological strength.

Dearest teachers, thank you for being there. In Atatürk’s words, “The new generation will be your accomplishment.”
